Photo credit: G.Kim 2011. Me pretending to drive, I can’t, which is why I am on the bus so often.
I’m going to get an outfit with a lot of tassels, good for twerking.
Fuck her, she never even responds to my Snap.
Nah that player is not halal, man. He’s haram, haram, man.
Round the church is the worst, lotta meth.
But even like the vegetarian lasagne is good when ma grandma make it.
No, nah, that is a Big Man Ting. Not for you.
Honestly, honestly NWA had a picture under that bridge, that bridge right there, see.
How much you drop? Money I mean.
Her eyelashes were too heavy, she had to remove them early.
Oh wow that one is reverberating down.
This piece was inspired by prompt 26 on Charles Bernstein and Bernadette Mayer’s list of 66 Experiments. Do check them out and if you are inspired by one of the 66 prompts yourself I’d love for you to share your writing below…
Here is my ‘I used to be…. but now I am….’ piece inspired by prompt 23 in that same collection and here are some Haikus I wrote in collab with writerly friend G.Kim.
For better or worse, I have a contribution for you! I started off by also responding to #27, which ended up turning into a dream journal, which then ended up with this...
Recurring Dream #3
It always starts in the same unreal city –
London and San Francisco mixed with a hint of Oakland,
Hackney housing blocks and chicken shops dropped on steep hills
the bay their backdrop, orange bridge meandering somewhere above the blue –
and I’m catching a flight to get home (unknown).
I haven’t packed at all and I’m lost in transit.
Wrong platform after platform, elevators lead only to others,
the Underground map all twisted lines and hieroglyphs.
I am almost lost forever when I remember my cat –
Where is Daisy?
Even dream me can’t lose her and a peripheral flicker of black fur reassures,
Reinstates the usual pace of my heart…but how will I carry her home?
I’m always wakened by the panic and pragmatism of cat carrier options.
Target vs Petsmart reclaim my reality,
a cat’s soft snores partial panacea for unbooked flights to unknown homes.
