Five Fine Things on a Thursday....
a new weekly segment in which I inflict my taste on others
Photo: Napping! When I nap I put up my hotel-style Do Not Disturb sign featuring our cat, Stevie as painted by David Horgan Art.
Bouncing! On a rebounder in my garden following the guidance of an encouraging American lady called Colette. Pure joy, good for the lymph-system, releases anger!
Listening! To Brad Listi on the Other PPL podcast in conversation with writer Claire Dederer on her new book ‘Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma’, a super-intelligent, actually nuanced discussion around the #MeToo movement, so-called ‘cancel culture’ and what it means to be a fan of a ‘Monster artist’. Listen here.
Reading! Margot by Wendell Steavenson this is a novel about the family and social lives of New York WASPs (white Anglo-Saxon protestants not insects!), about a woman who loves science (in the 1950s!), about sixties revolution, and about mother-daughter relations. I love a female bildungsroman and this one nails it!
Connecting! Via Stand on the Word Larry Levan’s remix of the Celestial Choir’s song. Read it written down and it’s didactic nonsense, listen to it sung over a disco track and it’s elevation. (Read some more of my views on spirituality here.)
Napping! Inspired by the revolutionary polemic Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey . Worth a slow read this is a book about de-programming from grind culture, about black liberation, womanism, somatics and more.
I’d love hear of some of things that are currently enriching your life, do comment below and thank you for reading!
Love,

What an inspiring list! I am especially a fan of bouncing and Larry Levan!
