Five Fine Things...

in case you don’t know this is a list of five things that I’ve been enjoying lately - I write these weekly to fortnightly and sometimes have arty guests sharing their favourite things too. More here.

1. Listening! to God is Alive, Magick is Afoot sung by Buffy Sainte Marie. This song, which is in fact an extract from Leonard Cohen’s novel Beautiful Losers, (here he is reciting it), is really more of an incantation🔮 ✊💥 and Sainte Marie is the perfect person to turn Cohen’s words into song, witchy and powerful.

2. Watching! Yellowjackets series on Paramount Plus. Lord of the Flies but instead of 11 -year old English private school boys it’s a much more frightening and much more resourceful demographic - a group of seventeen year old female American- soccer players. Featuring the powerhouses that are Juliette Lewis and Christina Ricci. (Note: I discovered number one via the show’s incredible soundtrack.)

3. Logging! what I read on Good Reads. I’ve been (fairly consistently) logging what I read on here since 2008, it’s an interesting record of my reading habits and shifting literary interests. Do join me!

4. (Also) Watching! Dancing with the Devil documentary on Netflix. The 7M TikTok Dance cult from the guy who brought you the Shekinah cult, so Hollywood, so twenty-first century but still with all the misogyny and abuse so typical of cults.

5. Reading! graduation poetry, it’s coming up to the end of the academic year so I’ve been exploring these with students, some are corny, some are good. A lovely resource for educators and students finishing things at this time of year.
